     Kollam is the entrance gate to the world of backwaters of Kerala. Kollam is known for its archaeological treasures and temples of Dravidian style of architecture. Alappuzha lies on the longest network of canals and inland lakes and lagoons that is the Vembanad Lake stretch. It is an important backwater trip destination famous for activities like boat races (August-September), para sailing, surfing, swimming and houseboat holidays.

     Cochin, also known as Kochi, presents a remarkable houseboat experience on its backwaters. Kochi, is known for its cluster of islands dotting the Vembanad Lake and its giant Chinese fishing nets that surround its natural harbor. It has always been famous as a trade centre for the British, French, Dutch and the Portuguese.

     Edakkal Caves, located in Wayanad, are naturally created caves, from the splits in the rocks present in the place. It is known for being the 'World's Richest Pictographic Gallery of Its Kind'. The rock carvings of the pre-historic era are a treasured attraction. Guruvayur Temple, where Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is worshiped, is the most important place of Hindu Pilgrimage of Kerala. It is known as the 'Dwarka of the South'. In this sacred temple, most of the marriages and other auspicious ceremonies like 'Annaprashar' or rice feeding ceremony takes place.

     Adventure freaks will be more than happy to visit Kerala, for the state offers an amazing variety of wildlife preserved in its sanctuaries and wildlife reserves, such as the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and the Eravikulam National Park. One can enjoy wildlife treks, camps, elephant and jeep safaris to enjoy their expedition to the fullest.

     Kerala is bestowed with a stimulating landscapes around the highlands of Western Ghats, where many of its famed hill stations are located, abundant in burgeoning tea, coffee and cardamom plantations, proliferating tributaries and winding roads. Lakkidi, Munnar, Vythiri, Devikulam and Idukki are some of the stunning destinations to explore. Chembra Peak, the highest peak of Wayanad at 2100 m above the sea level, is an ideal spot for trekking. Chithirapura, just 10 km from Munnar, is known for its spans of velvety tea-plantations. Devikulam is famous for its Sita Devi lake and its bordering locations, where people come for fishing and relaxing picnics. Munnar has the highest peak of Kerala, Anamudi and is a popular destination among travelers. Idukki inhabits a large number of tribal population. The place has facilities for elephant rides, trekking in spice plantations, wildlife tours and mountaineering.

     One must schedule the travel plans to Kerala in the monsoon months if possible. The two main reasons for doing so are firstly, you can see the enhanced magnificence of the greens drenched in the monsoon showers and secondly, you will get to color yourself in the festivity of the state as the boating festival commences with a thrill in the atmosphere with the peak in the monsoon season. Hundreds of rowers, get set to put a show of their strength and team-work, to battle it out with 13 other 130 ft long boats, to win adulation and the coveted Nehru Trophy. It takes place on the second Saturday of August, every year. Another boating fiesta takes place on the holy river of Pamba is known as the Aranmula Boat carnival. It is a more traditional boat race that commences on the auspicious day of Thiruonam. Other boat races that take place are Champakulam Boat Race, Indira Gandhi Boat Race and Rajiv Gandhi Boat Race.

     The main carnivals of Kerala include Malabar Festival, which is a celebration of the rich culture and tradition of Kerala. It takes place in the month of January. Cochin Carnival is the week-long new year celebrations and feasting which is continuing from the colonial era. Other main festivals that are celebrated with equal charm and pomp are Christmas, as majority of the inhabitants of the place are followers of Christianity, Deepawali, the national festival of India, Onam which is the harvest festival of Kerala and Makaravilakku on the occasion of Makara Sankranti at Sabarimala Temple.
